Growing Parsnips

Growing parsnips is a little like growing carrots, as far as growing conditions go. But generally when I plant seeds, I only get a few coming up and it is hardly worth bothering.
Then I discovered that parsnips like really really fresh seed in order to germinate. This year I looked after my one and only parsnip plant , that survived chicken attacksand  hot summer days .I planted it in a shady area near the passionfruit vine.
The parsnip was not picked to eat  though, I let it go to seed..so little roundish flat seeds hung off the plant for weeks before they dried out. I allowed some to drop where they fell into the soil and kept some for planting elsewhere in the garden.
The result is the most parsnip seedlings I have ever had coming up in our garden. Here's hoping they get a nice cold winter so they are nice and sweet .

I don't even think I am going to try those parsnip seeds I was given - thinking about doing a giveaway so someone in a cooler climate can try them.

Impressed! I haven't had much luck with carrots and have never grown parsnip. I will persevere and, if they work, I'll definitely let some go to seed! Thanks for sharing.

I have heard that parsnip seed needs to be very fresh. I guess that's why I haven't bothered.
I hope yours does well!
