The supermarket challenge has opened many doors to my thinking this year. Staying away from the two major supermarkets has been 'food ' for thought .... I am realising just how many other things can be made at home rather than bought, for a start.
Why have plain old  custard with bought  custard powder when you can have bread and butter pudding made with homemade bread ,fresh goats milk and eggs from your own chickens! Why get baked beans out of a can when you can make a whole batch to put in the freezer using navy beans? The list is growing .
But.... I haven't been perfect. We are 30 minutes drive from most retailers . I shop at the local IGA , but for items like toilet paper ...the grocery bill soon becomes unaffordable. So I have had to bend my rules a little. I go to Aldi on a Thursday when we are already in town and buy things that we cannot get affordably through the local organic homedelivery or the local small shops .
On the good side , I have been shopping at the local fresh fish shop on the way home from work and have an order from an organic retailer for a humungous bag of spelt flour. My thinking and shopping is changing because of the challenge.
So ,  far I haven't needed to even think about going to the two major supermarkets...haven't missed them a bit . But...we are running out of gluten free flour and it is , as most gluten free foods are , very expensive. I have always bought this at the big supermarkets. Any ideas on how I can get White wings gluten free flour at a decent price?

Its a big job isnt it...I mean, growing it, planning it, making it, baking it...only to eat it! I try so hard to make from scratch but the weeks that I really do well, I find I am in the kitchen most of the day! It really makes me admire the mums of the past who HAD to make everything, including clothes etc....it's a big turnaround, one which I am yet to make fully...yes...I do have school bought snacks in my cupboard..and yes, I paid too much for them and they are not good for the kids...and I bought them from the nasty supermarket...lol...I am trying though...and thats half the battle...ps I LOVE home made bread and butter pudding, but no one else does...so when I make it, I get to eat it ALL...

Yes it is a big job , Suzanne but we are enjoying the good homecooked food. Though I am the same , we still have things for those 'busy times' in the cupboard too.
I think perhaps the mums in the 'olden days' often had extended family in the home helping out with all those homemade tasks .But then again , they didn't have all the 'gadgets ' we have to help us.
The pudding was good , Linda...it lasted a day and a half for packed lunches and it was gone.

Have you thought about buying online as I have a friend who does this and she said it actually works out cheaper than travelling to the nearest town? Her grocery list includes flours, grains etc. I could find out who she buys from if you like.
Cheers,
Robyn

Yes I have been considering that. If you know of a good site, that would be good.
Thanks Rob.

Kim I have bought flour online in the past with no problems at all. Not GF, but good product. I can try and track down the one I used, it was very good. I don't bake so much these days, so rarely buy flour. cheers Wendy

Thanks , Wendy...I was thinking about using Organic feast...it is that same thing, when you look about the time it takes to go and buy it and you can get it delivered, it does work out cheaper or at least the same price as you would get from a big supermarket.
For little things, I don't mind paying a bit extra , but it does add up with staples and we use alot of flour with school lunches to pack.
